The Musical Adventures Of John Donald Robb In New Mexico
In June 2008, KNME-TV New Mexico PBS premiered The Musical Adventures of John Donald Robb in New Mexico. Kelly Kowalski and Jason Skinner of KNME received an Emmy Award for their interactive website featuring the Robb documentary.
The late John Donald Robb loved and composed all kinds of music, but his passion for the songs of everyday folk is what he is remembered for most. Roaming the countryside of the Southwest during the 1940s and 50s, Robb recorded and transcribed over 3,000 Indigenous, Hispano, and Anglo folk songs, the largest collection of its time. Listen below to some of these recorded folk tunes from Mexico and New Mexico, and watch the half hour KNME-PBS documentary celebrating the life of this adventurous musician and to modern day ethnomusicologists who continue to record and archive New Mexico's disappearing folk music traditions.
