Enjoy an afternoon of time-honored New Mexico folk-music traditions featuring some of the state’s most celebrated performers who embody the living tradition of New Mexico music at ¡¡Música del Corazón: A Celebration of Nuevomexicano Music!! The event is being presented by the UNM John Donald Robb Musical Trust and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

The festivities, a celebration of the Robb Trust's 25th anniversary, will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center with a variety of activities that will explore the contributions of John Donald Robb. His fascination with the traditional music and dance of the upper Rio Grande led to nearly 3,000 field recordings of music that he collected during far-flung excursions in the mid-20th century. In addition to Robb’s recordings, now housed at the UNM Center for Southwest Research, pre-concert activities will include a demonstration of how to access the Robb Musical Archives from your home computer.
Also during the pre-concert activities, [NEW LINK TO COME] Hispanic Folk Music of New Mexico and the Southwest: A Self-Portrait of a People, will be for sale. This exhaustive study based on Robb's extensive research was originally published in 1980. Now, 34 years later, UNM Press has re-published what is still considered one of the most complete syntheses of Hispanic folk music in print.
The 3 p.m. John Donald Robb, Jr. Concert will follow the pre-concert activities. This exciting concert will be curated by Enrique Lamadrid and performers will include:
  • Longtime Albuquerque favorite Frank McCulloch, who grew up surrounded by New Mexico folk music;
  • New Mexico treasures Antonia and José Apodaca, who embody the durability and vitality of ages-old musical traditions;
  • Miguelito Romero, a renowned composer of contemporary corridos and an accomplished accordion player;
  • Ray Pérez and his Coro de San José, a traditional choral group from the San José Obrero Parish;
  • David F. Garcia, well known for his soaring tenor vocals and violin playing. He is also an emerging scholar of Nuevomexicano music.
  • Brenda Romero, a celebrated ethnomusicologist.

All events are free, but tickets will be required and can be picked up at the NHCC box office beginning at 2 p.m. on Sept. 14. Come early and enjoy the pre-concert festivities!
