New Mexico folk traditions, old and new, will take center stage during an afternoon of captivating music at ¡¡Música del Corazón!! A Celebration of Nuevo Mexicano Music. The annual John D. Robb, Jr., Concert will begin at 3 p.m. Oct. 16 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th St. SW in Albuquerque, preceded by an informative pre-concert lecture at. 2:15 p.m.
Here's the lineup for this year's concert:
  • Much-loved Albuquerque guitarist Frank McCulloch will bring his favorite melodies. A 2001 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, he is a well-known New Mexican landscape artist and musician who’s performed regional folksongs since childhood. McCulloch began playing the folk music of this region in the 1950s and was recorded by the eminent musician and collector John Donald Robb.
  • Cipriano Vigil y la Familia: one of the greatest folk musicians to emerge from New Mexico, was born in Chamisal (northeast of Española). Vigil plays more than 50 instruments and is a 1994 recipient of the Governors Awards for Excellence in the Arts. He recently authored the book New Mexican Folk Music/Cancionero del Folklor Nuevo Mexicano. He will be joined onstage by his son, daughter, and grandchildren.
  • Consuelo Luz: vocal alchemist, singer/songwriter, activist, award-winning recording and performance artist, known worldwide for her soulful interpretation of Sephardic music, has performed internationally. Her exploration of Sephardic music, Hebrew mystical tradition and North and South American indigenous teachings and her urge to express her own insights and passions in original songs has taken her out into the world to perform in various venues throughout Europe and the United States.
  • A.J. Martinez: The young NM “King of Polka,” joined by his sister Taralynn (vocals), performs old and new polkas, valses, and the varsoviana from the old “Spanish Colonial” repertory. Martinez has performed with legendary Al Hurricane and numerous other locally and nationally beloved groups. In 2011, Martinez received a coveted award from 15 Grandes de Nuevo Mexico for the remake and release of Mosquito Junction.
• Enrique Lamadrid (concert curator and pre-concert lecture speaker) is a nationally recognized folklorist and musicologist and the author of the award-winning book Hermanitos Comanchito, published by UNM Press. He has served as a field worker and presenter for the Smithsonian Institution's Festivals of American Folk Life and has done extensive work for the Museum of New Mexico and National Hispanic Cultural Center.
