28-MAR-2010 through 31-MAR-2010 The 2010 UNM John Donald Robb Composers' Symposium featured Martin Bresnick, Professor of Composition at Yale University, winner of numerous prizes and commissions (Fulbright, Rome Prize, Guggenheim, Berlin Prize, Koussevitsky Commission), and elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2006. His music was performed by members of the UNM faculty as well as by guest performers including Lisa Moore, "New York's Queen of Avant-Garde piano" according to The New Yorker magazine, and founding pianist for the Bang-On-A-Can All Stars; and the Iridium Saxophone Quartet featuring UNM faculty member Eric Lau. As usual, Monday included music by John Donald Robb, which was performed by pianist Tatiana Vetrinskaya and baritone, Javier Ortiz. Tuesday afternoon featured a new collaborative work by composer/guitarist William Fowler Collins and video artist Claudia X. Valdes, member of the UNM Art department. New Music Wednesday featured two young artists from New York City: composer/pianist Noam Sivan and composer/guitarist Lily Maase, whose band Suite Unraveling also presented a concert at the Outpost Performance Space on Thursday April 1. The opening concert, once again in collaboration with the Outpost Performance Space (Sunday March 28, 7:30 PM), featured legendary guitarist Bill Frisell and Albuquerque's own Rahim Alhaj. They also performed on the Monday evening concert at UNM. The usual complement of outstanding New Mexico composers and UNM faculty was featured throughout the event. Except for the Outpost concerts, all evening performances and daytime activities were free and open to the public. Comments are closed.
