Saliendo by Frank McCullough
In this anniversary year, we are happy to showcase the Robb Trust's sixth annual Música del Corazón concert, Sin Fronteras. We pay homage to those performers, teachers, field workers, and researchers who have elevated La Música Nuevomexicana to a new level and its rightful place among World Music traditions. Our concert theme is the rediscovery, revitalization, and celebration of four centuries of music making. Music is born from, but not bound to its cultural and ethnic roots. It crosses ethnic and national boundaries freely without passports, visas, or walls. The title Sin Fronteras honors our all inter-cultural and inter-national projects, as well as Bayou Seco's 1986 cassette "No Borders," their declaration of independence and love letter to New Mexico. The work of John Donald Robb and his Archive of Southwestern Music has inspired and informed us all.
Featuring Frank McCullough, Cipriano Vigil, Bayou Seco, and Lone Piñon, this concert represents decades of folk music in New Mexico. It will be preceded by a demonstration from the New Mexico Heritage Society, which will illustrate how stringed instruments are made. We are also thrilled to recognize Professor Enrique Lamadrid for his dedication to musical scholarship with this year's Robb Musical Trust Award.

Join us on November 14 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center for a screening of the NMPBS documentary ¡Colores! The Musical Adventures of John Donald Robb in New Mexico. This documentary describes Robb's quest to record and preserve more than 3,000 New Mexican folk, most of which had never been recorded and some of which were hundreds of years old. His collection is in the Center for Southwest Research Archives. By screening this documentary, we want to honor Robb's work and continue his legacy of scholarship and dedication to música del corazón, the people's music. This will be followed by a live performance of excerpts from Robb's opera Joy Comes to Deadhorse, which was the precursor to the Broadway hit The Fantasticks. This will be performed by the New Mexico Performing Arts Society under the direction Franz Vote. Be sure to stick around afterward for desserts!
