St. Louis Chamber Orchestra Performs Robb Symphony
14-Nov-2010John Donald Robb's Symphony No. 1 was well received in a performance by the Saint Louis Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Richards on Sunday, November 14, 2010, in the "Music at Maryville" series on the campus of Maryville University in St. Louis. The popular concert series began in 1980 as a way to spotlight classical music on the Maryville campus and continues to attract internationally renowned musicians.
Robb's Symphony No.1 for String Orchestra was written shortly after World War II and the second movement, "Elegy for Our War Dead", reflects Robb's service as commander of the First Battalion of the United States Field Artillery in World War I. It is often performed independently of the symphony and is a meditative reflection of its time and dedicated to those in the U.S. military who died during World War II.
Dr. James Richards is conductor and music director of the Saint Louis Chamber Orchestra and the Gateway Festival Orchestra of St. Louis.
