Composers' Symposium 2012

The works of more than 40 modern composers with ties to New Mexico will be featured from Thursday March 22 through Saturday March 31 at the 41st annual University of New Mexico (UNM) John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium. Guest artists will include Emanuele Arciuli, pianist; Gamelan Encantada; Kay Stonefelt, percussion; and Artists in Residence the Del Sol String Quartet. Performances will take place in venues across Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

The 2012 festival is certain to be the most ambitious in the symposium’s history, and its most collaborative. The symposium will also feature an installation at the UNM Art Museum and a variety of daytime presentations that complement the evening performances.

Here Comes Everybody: Celebrating the New Mexico Centennial by featuring New Mexico composers past and present! That’s the theme of the 2012 festival that has been attracting composers, musicians and music lovers from around the world to the UNM campus for 41 years.

In their role as Artists in Residence, members of the Del Sol String Quartet will be performing in several concerts and presenting master classes for UNM students. Concerts in Keller Hall on the UNM campus will expand to include Saturday evening as well as Wednesday (3/28) and Thursday (3/29) afternoons. Other presenting organizations taking part include the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe (3/22), Chatter Chamber Ensemble (3/25), Outpost Performance Space (3/25) and North Fourth Art Center 3/29) in Albuquerque.

An exciting schedule of daytime events will take place on weekdays and will include sessions on the history of composed music in New Mexico, the legacy of John Donald Robb, and two sessions featuring previous and future directors of the symposium discussing the past, present and future of the John Donald Robb Composers' Symposium.
