2012 Robb Concert to Celebrate NM Centennial
12-FEB-2012

The 2012 Robb Concert will
feature an exciting lineup of New Mexico musicians in a celebration of
the New Mexico Centennial. The concert, free and open to the public,
will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday February 12 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC).
The concert, presented
annually by the John Donald Robb Musical Trust at the University of New
Mexico in collaboration with the NHCC, honors the contributions of Robb,
former dean of the College of Fine Arts and a recognized music pioneer
through his own compositions and preservation of northern New Mexico
Hispanic folk music.
At the February concert, Hispanic folk songs will be performed in much the same way they were collected in the 1940s and 1950s by Dean Robb in Northern New Mexican villages on a Wollensak wire recorder attached to his car battery.
New Mexico favorites Frank McCulloch y sus Amigos will perform Hispanic folk songs from the Robb Archives, which are located in the UNM Libraries’ Center for Southwest Research. Dr. Regina Carlow’s UNM Dolce Suono Chorus will sing Robb’s “Song for New Mexico,” and Lili del Castillo, a nationally renowned flamenco dancer and choreographer, will present her interpretation of music that will be performed on guitar by her husband, Luis Campos. He is also a member of McCulloch’s sus Amigos, along with violinist Melody Mock.
Mezzo-soprano Lina Ramos will sing settings of Hispanic folk music as interpreted by Robb. She will be joined by Kevin Vigneau on oboe and James Bratcher on piano. For the finale, the audience and the performers will sing the New Mexico State Song, Elizabeth Garrett’s “O Fair New Mexico.”
Admission to the concert is free, and tickets may be picked up beginning at 2 p.m. before the concert at the NHCC box-office. At the same time, you can visit the center's museum, which will be open prior to the concert. For more information, please call the Trust office at 505-277-8967.
